2016 Spring Workshop
Thursday, March 31, 2016
Jones River Landing, Kingston

This workshop was hosted by the Jones River Watershed Association.  The Association and the Town of Kingston are in the early stages of a dam removal project at the Elm St crossing of the Jones River.  Attendees heard a presentation about the project and then the group visited the site together with representatives from the Town and the Division of Marine Fisheries.  The goal of the workshop was to gather input on the project from wardens and natural resources officers in other towns, and to provide an example to them of the steps involved in a dam removal project.

A summary of the workshop and photos of the day can be viewed at the link below:

2012 Fall Workshop
Thursday, September 13, 2012, 5:30-7:30pm
Bourne Veteran's Memorial Community Center - 239 Main St, Buzzards Bay, MA

The September Workshop focused on the details of River Herring Sustainable Fishery Plans. Brad Chase discussed the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission's requirement that states must submit a Sustainable Fishery Plan before opening herring runs to harvest. He showed examples of plans that have been approved, and discussed what steps towns could take to gather the necessary information about their runs.

The 2nd half of the workshop offered herring wardens the opportunity to share their experiences and knowledge with each other on the topics of water withdrawals, invasive species management, passage restrictions and water quality management. Volunteers gave 5-10 minute informal talks on one of the above topics. Information included notable and/or everyday experiences, lessons learned the hard way, funny stories, and recommendations for new herring wardens. If you are interested in more information, please view the workshop materials at the links below.
